What is eSigning?
The term "eSigning" (also referred to as eSign and eSignature) describes the online ability to electronically "sign" legal papers in lieu of a traditional "wet" or ink signature on physical documents. At Nelnet, you will have the option to electronically sign your Federal PLUS or Grad PLUS Master Promissory Note (MPN).
By signing electronically, you will be certifying that your have read, understand and fully agree to all of the information contained in the PLUS or Grad PLUS MPN including but not limited to: loan terms, conditions, notices, disclosures, certifications, authorizations, promise to pay, repayment options and rights and responsibilities.
How do I electronically sign my PLUS or Grad PLUS MPN?
The simple electronic signature process involves the following steps:
- You consent (agree) to electronically sign your PLUS or Grad PLUS MPN,
- You review your PLUS or Grad PLUS MPN containing all of the individual and personal information you have already provided,
- You electronically sign your PLUS or Grad PLUS MPN with your US Department of Education PIN,
- You submit your PLUS or Grad PLUS MPN to us,
- You print or access a copy of your submitted PLUS or Grad PLUS MPN.
Before you electronically sign your PLUS or Grad PLUS MPN, you must consent to conduct this transaction electronically. When you provide your consent to conduct this transaction electronically, your consent will be for the sole and limited purpose of completing this transaction. The consent will not cover any future transactions that you may wish to conduct electronically. You will be required to provide a new consent for any future transactions you wish to conduct with us.
What do I need to get started?
To conduct transactions electronically at Nelnet, you will need the following:
- Access to a computer.
- Access to the Internet.
- Internet Explorer version 5.5 or higher. Download newer version of Internet Explorer.
- In order to review your MPN, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4.0 or higher installed on your computer. You can download a free copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
- MAC users may experience difficulties.
- Access to a laser or ink-jet printer.
How do I access the system?
You will be asked to create a user id and password and will log in with that information.
What information do I need to have ready to complete the application?
To expedite the application process, please have the following information ready:
- Driver's License.
- Two personal references (who have known you for at least three years). Please have their name, address, telephone number and email address ready.
- Student's social security number.
- Your US Department of Education PIN if you would like to electronically sign the PLUS or Grad PLUS MPN.
How do I get a U.S. Department of Education PIN?
You must have a U.S. Department of Education PIN to electronically sign your document online. For more information and to obtain a PIN, go to the
U.S. Department of Education's PIN web site.
Can I save an application in progress?
Yes. If you cannot finish the form in a single session, Nelnet allows you to save your information. You may then return to the site to complete and submit your application any time within 30 days.
What if I don't want to electronically sign my MPN at Nelnet?
At any time prior to submitting your electronic signature, you may opt out of the electronic signature process either by selecting one of the MPN print options or by selecting return to print options located at the bottom of the final application pages. This will enable you to print a copy of the PLUS or Grad PLUS MPN on your local printer. In order to print, you must have a laser or ink-jet printer and Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 or higher installed. You can download a free copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Do I always have a choice?
Yes, just because you sign one MPN electronically, it does not force you to sign all MPNs electronically. When you provide your consent to conduct this transaction electronically, your consent will be for the sole and limited purpose of completing this transaction. The consent will not cover any future transactions that you may wish to conduct electronically. You will be required to provide a new consent to any future transactions you wish to conduct with us.
You may withdraw your consent to conduct this transaction electronically at any time prior to the submission of your PLUS or Grad PLUS MPN to us. You may withdraw the consent by exiting from the process either by 1) choosing not to continue the process, or 2) closing the Internet connection to us.
